Charlestown bounce back at the first attempt

Charlestown 1-7

Final four places in senior championship decided

Could Castlebar Mitchels stop Ballintubber's drive for three senior titles in a row? That was the big question that was being asked in the lead up to last weekends quarter finals in the Treanlaur Catering Senior Football Championship. After 60 minutes of battle on Sunday evening, for the third year in row, Ballintubber emerged victorious from the heat of championship battle with their near neighbors.

Tall order for Westmeath as Kerry come to town

image preview

It is surely a case of nothing to lose and everything to gain as Westmeath welcome Kerry to Cusack Park on Sunday for round two of the all-Ireland qualifiers. Nobody, diehards included, are giving Pat Flanagan’s men a chance and the consensus is that it is only a matter of by how much will the Kingdom reign supreme.

Exiles send Mayo packing

London 2-15

There is a lot of good to be taken from league final defeat

Our Mayo side was once again placed under the whitest of lights in Croke Park and we all once again waited for coronations. Then the seemingly inevitable uncorked the vitriol. It started in the stands with several around me shaking their heads and leaving long before the final whistle. It is not a nice thing, from a player’s point of view, to see ‘your’ supporters walking out before the game has finished. It is their (the supporters) signal to the players that, for them at least, the show is over.

Footballers will be promoted if they beat Kildare

It was good to see the Galway footballers fight back from a bad position in the first half in Pearse Park, Longford, last Sunday and claim a crucial two points against Monaghan.

Connolly’s Mayo look to Cross’ Armagh challenge

The Mayo hurlers will face a long trip to Crossmaglen on Sunday afternoon where they will be looking to keep their unbeaten record intact against the Ulster men. Murt Connolly’s side followed up their win over Roscommon in Athleague on the opening day with a spirited draw against a fancied Meath side in McHale Park. The draw has kept Mayo in second place in the league table behind leaders Kildare and the 3-28 that Mayo have scored so far this year is a more than encouraging sign. The fact that Mayo managed to rack up 3-12 last weekend without Keith Higgins who was on football duty is another major plus for Connolly’s Mayo side.

Midlands match up for Mayo on Saturday

If you are a Castlebar based Mayo supporter and are planning on following the fortunes of James Horan’s Mayo side through all seven rounds in division one of the Allianz National Football League, the first leg of the 1,050 mile, 11 week odyssey will get under way tomorrow. There is no short away jaunts for Mayo this year as the league will take them on the road to Portlaoise, Armagh, Ballyshannon, and Tralee, two of those games, the trips to Laois and Armagh, to be undertaken on a Saturday night. While it looks like a daunting number of miles for those who are lucky to live close to the county town, you can add on another 400 miles for those hardy Gaels who hail from Belmullet who will follow the fortunes of the green and red.

Muredach’s bow out to Sligo men

image preview

St Muredach’s College interest in this year’s Connacht Colleges Senior A Championship came to a crashing end in Cloonacool on Wednesday afternoon. The Ballina men looked to be well on their way to defeat at the break when they trailed by 1-8 to 1-2 after being thoroughly outplayed for the first 30 minutes. However a spirited fightback saw them get within four points of the Sligo men with 10 minutes left. However when sub Stephen Kearns drove the ball to the back of the net from close range for Summerhill’s second goal, the Ballina rebellion was quenched.
